Verdict: ⊗⊗⊗

Moonfall is dumb, but it's not really trying to hide it. It is a sci-fi disaster movie that is more on the fiction side than science, even though it occasionally throws in some fancy sciency terms like "gravity" or whatever. Rarely, it does feel like a nice space movie, but then it quickly returns to the chaotic clusterfuck of whatever happens to the civilization when skies start to fall. Or at least it should, because the world plunges into chaos pretty early in the film, but we only get bits of that chaos through snippets of TV or radio news. It feels like a huge missed opportunity, as for the most of the movie we follow only three, almost random characters who often share a screen. There are other characters, but they fall very much in the background, along with the actual consequences of the titular calamity. There are some unnecessary deaths in the movie, and I would gladly trade some of the family drama scenes for more funny and/or disaster scenes. It delivers on spectacle though, but with some strange pacing and editing, it sometimes feels withheld. Casting is also a bit weird. Berry is too strong for this film, and Bradley not enough. I just didn't buy the conspiracies theories coming from Sam Tarly over here. Although charming, it really does feels like the same character. Meanwhile, Wilson seems just perfect for this role. Listen, Independence Day it is not, even though it obviously tries to be, but at least it has some mildly interesting reveals at the end that flimsily, but plausibly explain why everything is happening, almost literally. Moonfall is a modern disaster movie. None of them are great, but at least you know what you're getting.
